Panty Bunching

So Mr. Bush has his panties all in a wad because no one has taken a giant (US-owned, of course) fucking drill out into the middle of the ocean to start drilling for oil.

"There is no excuse for delay," the president said in a Rose Garden statement.

Really? REALLY? Yet we have fucking eight years to delay implementation of an economy based on renewable, non-polluting resources. Eight years to delay adopting lower standards for emissions. Eight years to sit back and watch our oil-buddies get richer while the working man suffers. Eight years of fucking bull shit.

I agree, there is no excuse for delay. January 20, 2009 cannot come soon enough.

Hear Hear! I'm so tired of small minded politics that never lead to a solution - just more of the same.

Correction - November 4, 2008 is the real date to institute change!

I read about this yesterday and I was so angry and disgusted with the proposal and McCain's support for it now, that I could not even form words.

Then later I heard about a book by Naomi Klein - Shock Doctrin

"... a truly unnerving argument: historically, while people were reeling from natural disasters, wars and economic upheavals, savvy politicians and industry leaders nefariously implemented policies that would never have passed during less muddled times. "

People who might not support drilling off the coast for oil are now having to choose between paying $5/gal for gas to get to work or feeding their children. Any relief (however short sighted, stupid, head burying) sounds good.

Why are gas prices so high? Perhaps we are being played.

I'm right there with ya'.
I've known Republicans that have been upset with the energy policies, going as far back as six years ago.

Despite the fact that drilling in any new region, such as ANWR or offshore drilling, would take tremendous cost, in time and money, just to build to infrastructure to transport the crude, they are so tied to the oil firms, it's DRILL DRILL DRILL for them.

I was so incensed I wrote my two Senators and my one Congressman, imploring them to vote NO to any more drilling and YES to seeking alternatives (including Riot4Austerity ;). I'm sure the Congressman will vote Monsieur Bush down, because he doesn't want drilling for more oil - not so sure about the two Republican Senators - of course, one is up for reelection and one of the people running against her is the aforementioned Congressman (heh! heh! heh!).

Now don't be shy. Tell me how you really feel about it :)

I'm totally with you. Someone needs to tell that man to can it. My hubby can't even stand the sound of his voice anymore. Bring on the elections. I already know who I'm voting for. Let's do this and get a real president!

I couldn't agree more! And the horrible, ironic, miserable fact is that oil companies and politicians only entertain the idea of drilling in these sensative natural areas (as though there were any other type of natural area) when the price of oil is high - not because they have any plan to bring prices down, but rather to maximize their profits.

The thing is, you can't just whack a pipe in the ground and have oil gush up like it did for the Beverley Hillbillies. Dubya's talking about Alaska and deep water.

So up in Alaska you've got glaciers and subzero weather year-round, and even then there's a few miles of rock to drill through to get to the oil. And off in deep water, you've got to go three miles down to the seabed, then another mile through rock, then a couple of miles through a salt layer, and then another mile through rock, and only then do you hit the oil. There are enormous pressures and wild temperatures down there.

Nobody's ever drilled in those sorts of conditions before. You need really good engineers working for years to figure out how to do it without smashing the drill bits after five minutes of drilling.

Worldwide there's a shortage of oil rigs. Build more? Well, the people who know how to build them are kept busy repairing the old ones. And those engineers who can drill? Not enough of them, either. You have to pay top dollar, especially if you want them to live out in the Arctic or something.

All that takes a lot of money and years of time. From "go" to "flow" you're looking at 10 years or so. And by that time a lot of older oilfields around the world will have declined, so you don't actually end up with more oil on the market.

You'd think that as a former oilman Dubya would understand this stuff. But I guess he really has been incompetent at every single job he's ever tried.

You said it!

The other fun thing about what he's suggesting that NPR never makes any mention of is the TIMEFRAME. Exactly how long will it take to get oil out of ANWAR? Hmm? It's not going to help anyone RIGHT NOW, is it? Also, how many barrels of oil did you say were there? Oh. 18 million? billion? Is that total? Per day? Per year? How many do we Americans go through daily? Oooh, probably WAY lots more than 18 million/billion.

So...what use, exactly, is it to drill in sensitive areas, that we won't actually get any oil from for YEARS, that won't even be enough oil to cover a single day of American use?

Oh yeah! It's because it will make some rich men in TX even richer.

I forgot. That's what it's all about, ain't it?

Gaaah!

Oh and hello! I love your blog! Though I do tend to lurk an awful lot.

i'm with the husband mentioned above who can't even bear to hear his voice any more! i try to listen tho because his days are numbered and i know he still has a few more blunders to make on his way out- 1-that "unfinished business" with iran, and 2-access to currently protected environments to pursue his business interests in oil. november and january can't come soon enough...so much is at stake.

I heard this on Oprah, years and years before he was even a twinkle in the election's eye...

"O-Bama! - You're Bar-Rockin' My World!"

:o) Can we please fast forward to November?!?

Haha! Great comments. Just what I felt like when I saw that news yesterday. Glad to see someone actually write those thoughts down! We need to keep up the pressure on our Congressmen and Senate officials to make sure we don't succumb to more of this administrations horrible tactics.

I want to have a massive (green) party on 1-20-09. Yay! Can't wait. I also can barely look at that man, there's so much blood on his hands...
I cannot believe he happened to our country. Great post, I can tell you are my peeps! Jen K from HB, CA

You expect your country to change for the better in Dubya's absence, Jenni? You are an optimistic woman...

What, specifically and in concrete terms, do you think your new President and Congress will actually do?

To be honest, going on the Australian experience of ridding ourselves of a vile oaf to replace him with an utter mediocrity, the best you can hope for is not someone who does good, but someone who at least is too timid to do bad...

How does a person know there's oil on a piece of property?

Does a bit of it just seep up on it's own?

If so, can it seep up in a body of water?
